The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of how forestry impacts the large mammal community on Vancouver Island, with particular focus on how disturbance features, such as cut blocks and roads, change habitat use and lead to potential changes in species interactions. The first phase of this project included 55 cameras deployed across forest age categories to investigate habitat use patterns and species co-occurrence at camera sites. Phase two of this project will seek to understand forestry road use by large animals, using a paired design (camera on road and off road), with the aim of understanding in what situations roads selected by wildlife, how disturbance shapes this, and the consequences for species interactions.
